GOOD HEALTH THROUGH PREVENTION

Course Description
The Prevention course provides an introduction and overview to all the principles and therapeutics of Maharishi Vedic Medicine (MVM). Course content provides the student with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practice of Ayurveda, a traditional medicine with 6000 years of continuous clinical application. This course provides the theoretical foundation for understanding of Ayurveda as well as providing the skills necessary to apply the knowledge clinically. Instruction in the Transcendental Meditation technique will be included as part of this course (see separate template for description of the TM course).

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to: Be a competent and confidant practitioner of TM. Apply the tri-doshic theoretical framework of Ayurveda to clinical cases. Understand the technique of pulse for evaluating individual doshic imbalances and write appropriate dietary recommendations based on those doshic imbalances. Utilize AV knowledge concerning behavior and daily seasonal cycles to write appropriate recommendations for clients. Describe the role of different branches of the Vedic Literature in relation to the human physiology and health. Describe the role of panchakarma and herbal rasayanas in creating ojas and nourishing enhanced health. Recognize the relationship of mental and physical sensory experience with consciousness. Relate the connection of individual to collective consciousness and its impact on individual and societal health through review of relevant research.

SELF PULSE READING FOR GOOD HEALTH

Prerequisites

Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to nadi-vigyan or pulse reading. The ability to read a patient's pulse is a basic diagnostic skill of Ayurvedic medicine. Students will first learn to recognize all aspects of pulse analysis within their own pulse. They will then practice and progress in the ability to analyze the doshic balance or imbalance in the physiology of others. Students will learn the correlation of pulse with specific illnesses for the purpose of enhancing their diagnostic capabilities and treatment.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to: Demonstrate the physical technique of nadi-vigyan or pulse reading. Demonstrate the ability to distinguish between the three doshas utilizing pulse-taking and recognize balanced versus imbalanced pulse. Relate this understanding to specific clinical cases. Demonstrate the ability to identify the sub-doshas utilizing pulse. Relate specific sub-doshas to their associated organ systems and areas of functioning. Relate this understanding to specific clinical cases. Relate the concept of ojas and its identification in the pulse. Relate this understanding to specific clinical cases. Relate the significance of ama and its identification in the pulse. Relate this understanding to specific clinical cases. Describe the relationship of consciousness to pulse taking and creating balance in the physiology.

DIET AND NUTRITION

Prerequisites

Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive overview of a healthy diet from the standpoint of classical Ayurveda. The course will include specific information related to female dietary needs, as well as recipes and instruction in cooking and meal preparation from an Ayurvedic perspective. Students will be given the skills necessary to apply this knowledge in the clinical setting with their patients.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to: Describe the relationship of dietary intake to good health from the Ayurvedic perspective. Identify doshic predominance in the pulse and relate this to agni/digestion. Identify specific approaches for improving digestion. Recognize eight primary factors to utilize when preparing and eating foods. Recognize and relate the relationship between specific qualities/tastes of foods and their impact on balance of the doshas and dhatus. Recommend specific medicinal foods and relate their appropriate preparation and intake. Describe the role of proper diet in nourishing the relationship between the human physiology and its expression as Veda.

MOTHER-BABY HEALTH

Prerequisites

Course Description
This course provides comprehensive knowledge on care for couples through the child-bearing period including pre-conception, conception, pregnancy, labor and delivery, and post-partum. Training in provision of in-home care for both mother and newborn after delivery is provided. This includes instruction in massage for both mother and her infant, knowledge of appropriate routine for couples and baby during the initial six week post-partum period, extensive knowledge on diet including recipes and meal plans, and appropriate herbal use and remedies.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to: Understand the theoretical framework of Ayurveda: elements, doshas, physiological balance and imbalance, as well as the wholeness of physiological functioning related to consciousness. Understand appropriate preparation for pregnancy to ensure fertility and maximize health for both mother and infant. Enhance the state of pregnancy from conception to delivery utilizing specific Ayurvedic guidelines for diet and behavior. Improve outcomes for patients related to the Ayurvedic focus on prevention oriented healthcare, with knowledge of relevant research validating classical Ayuvedic approaches to maternity care. Provide knowledge to couples to enhance maximal ease and success through the process of labor and delivery. Achieve competency in providing skilled in-home care and guidelines for mother and newborn in the first six weeks post-partum including: diet, routine, massage and heat application. Understand the relationship of specialized Ayurvedic care for both optimizing the mother's recovery following delivery, as well as enhancing the future health status of both mother and child.
