The Maharishi AyurvedaSM Approach to
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The Raj chronic fatigue program is conducted under the supervision of an Ayurveda Health Consultant and draws on knowledge from Maharishi Ayurveda, the world's oldest and most complete system of natural health care.

Through its unique assessment of causal imbalances at the basis of a condition and its wide range of time-tested recommendations, Maharishi Ayurveda provides the most comprehensive approach for chronic fatigue available in natural health care today.

A New Perspective on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Maharishi Ayurveda can make a major contribution to the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome through evaluation of causal factors. Determining the cause of the disorder is often problematic with the modern medical approach, because although the patient's symptoms are very marked and debilitating, there is often no clear physiological abnormality in bodily structure or function that can be located.

However, the Ayurveda assessment of balance and imbalance does not simply identify the gross physical abnormality. Ayurveda evaluation determines subtle disturbances of the functioning modes of the body which are responsible for different physiological functions.

This is important, as most diseases develop in stages. Often the beginning imbalances at the root cause of the disorder are not able to be discovered with modern medical diagnostics as the condition has not yet clearly manifested in a way that blood work or a gross physical exam can clearly determine. Usually the first instrument that is sensitive enough to pick up an imbalance is the nervous system of the patient, who often clearly experiences a disorder well before gross physiological changes occur.

By adding Ayurveda evaluations, especially traditional pulse assessment of imbalance, to your medical history, our Ayurveda Health Consultants are often able to give individuals a new perspective on the location and strength of the imbalances at the root cause of their experience of chronic fatigue.

Understanding the Root Causes of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The Factors at the Basis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The following areas are considered by Maharishi Ayurveda to be the most probable causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. This list also includes areas of physiological function that, if improved, could potentially reduce symptoms.

  1. Excessive mental or physical stress.
  2. Challenge of the immune response due to viral or bacterial infection.
  3. Low immunity and resistance.
  4. Hyperallergenic response.
  5. Improper nutrition.
  6. Poor digestion and elimination.
  7. Buildup of toxins in the physiology.
  8. Blockage of channels of circulation.
  9. Disruption of biological rhythms.
  10. Lack of rejuvenation regimens in lifestyle.

Maharishi Ayurveda sees these factors relating to four major sets of imbalances at the basis of chronic fatigue syndrome:

  1. Imbalance and deterioration of nervous system strength and stability.
  2. The buildup of toxins and impurities in tissues.
  3. Blockage of the channels of circulation and elimination responsible for nourishing and cleansing the tissues.
  4. Accumulation of physical and mental stress.

a) Nervous system imbalance

According to Ayurveda, the physiological principle at the basis of nervous system stability and activation is called Vata. Vata imbalance contributes to many of the following conditions:

  • Insomnia
  • Pain
  • Headaches
  • Constipation
  • Anxiety, worry and fear
  • Fatigue
  • Dry or rough skin
  • Poor digestion
  • Underweight
  • Heightened sensitivity

Because nervous system imbalance contributes to chronic fatigue syndrome, from the Ayurveda perspective Vata imbalance is an underlying cause of the condition and needs to be reversed.

Because Vata is the most easily disturbed physiological principle in the body, there are a wide variety of time-tested Ayurveda recommendations available to help balance Vata and remove the symptoms caused by its aggravation.

b) Buildup of toxins and impurities

Many disorders can occur when toxins build up in tissues. If toxins continually imbalance tissues the result can be fatigue and a deterioration of the body's energy, resistance and healing ability, leading to a worsening of many chronic conditions.

Secondly, toxins can block the channels of circulation and elimination. thus diminishing the natural cleansing processes of the body and allowing more impurities to accumulate in these tissue.

c) Lowering of resistance and immunity

The combination of Vata imbalance (nervous system weakness) and the buildup of toxins and impurities often significantly impairs digestion, elimination and circulation throughout the physiology. The end result of these two factors being present together is the depressing of the body's natural immunity and balancing mechanisms.

d) Stress management

Excessive mental, emotional and physical stress can worsen the symptoms of many chronic disorders, including chronic fatigue syndrome, and interfere with the ability of the body to heal itself. Enhancing the body's ability to recover from stress and eliminating the effects of stress are an integral part of The Raj's approach to health and well-being. Reversing the body's response to stress is aided in our In-residence program through the availability of :

  1. Instruction in the Transcendental Meditation® program
  2. Ayurveda massage and heat treatments
  3. Instruction in Yoga asana postures and Ayurveda flexibility exercises

A Natural, Effective Treatment Approach to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The following section describes the classic Ayurveda approaches used at The Raj to reduce Vata imbalance, eliminate toxin buildup, provide relief from stress and thereby remove the root causes of chronic fatigue syndrome.

a) Herbalized Oil Massage:

Your Ayurveda Health Consultants will choose a specific herbalized oil that is individually prepared for your condition. You will also be instructed in the technique of Ayurveda massage, which involves using specific strokes over different parts of the body.

Daily herbalized oil massage provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to the entire nervous system. The motion of massage creates heat and friction which enhance circulation and help cleanse the areas of chemical impurities that could be causing symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. The oil and herbs cleanse and nourish the tissues so that tissue development and repair is hastened.

The various herbs that have been boiled into a base oil, and the oil itself, are specifically chosen for their Vata balancing influence. The oil allows the herbs to deeply penetrate the tissue beds, thereby balancing the nerve and other tissues in the affected areas.

Your program involves two types of Ayurveda herbalized massage:

  1. Your home program involves herbalized self-massage for 5-10 minutes in the morning before you take your shower. Daily herbalized oil massage provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to the entire nervous system.
  2. During the in-residence portion of your program, highly trained Ayurveda technicians daily perform very specialized massage for you, using oils in which as many as 50 herbs have been cured. These special oils are only available as part of the in-residence program. These daily oil massages are a cornerstone of the in-residence cleansing process.

b) Diet, Nutrition and Digestion

Chronic fatigue syndrome can be created and aggravated through improper diet. Some foods can make Vata highly active, thereby worsening many of the symptoms of this condition.

Consultations with The Raj Ayurveda Health Consultants, along with daily educational meetings, will help you understand which foods are the most clogging and obstructing to circulation and which are the hardest to digest. These foods have the potential to create toxins and aggravate chronic fatigue syndrome.

Foods that can easily be digested, creating micronutrients that are then assimilated into the tissues to rebuild their strength, will be recommended. Your Ayurveda Health Consultants will also provide programs to improve digestion, an important prerequisite for overcoming chronic fatigue.

During your in-residence stay at The Raj you will also learn the basic principles of Ayurveda cooking. The Raj cooking classes provide knowledge of how to prepare foods in ways that create maximum nourishment for the body and that prevent incomplete digestion and clogged circulation.

In summary, improper nutrition can create and aggravate chronic fatigue syndrome, but proper nutrition can go a long way toward curing and preventing it.

c) Stress Management and Improved Mental and Emotional Function

Many individuals experience that chronic fatigue syndrome is often worsened by periods of heightened stress. This is due to hormonal changes and other biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system, create pain and depress the immune response. The Raj Ayurveda Health Consultants recommend practice of the Transcendental Meditation program for removing the stress component of chronic fatigue syndrome.

If you choose to learn meditation during your in-residence stay at The Raj, highly trained teachers of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique are available to instruct you in the TM program. The TM technique has a wealth of scientific research verifying its effect on reducing many of the mental and stress factors influencing chronic fatigue syndrome. Research shows it creates virtually the opposite physiological response that stress does and helps the body recover more quickly from stressful stimuli.

Practice of the TM technique twice a day is an ideal mental approach to the problems of chronic fatigue syndrome. The TM program at The Raj gets your practice off to a strong start, and your instructor will help connect you with the local TM program center in your home area for any follow-up that you may desire.

d) Lifestyle and Daily Routine

One of the most important factors for balancing Vata and maintaining stability in the nervous system is to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural bodily rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles and cannot cleanse or heal itself as effectively. Therefore, regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing Vata imbalances.

Improper lifestyle can create the Vata imbalance at the basis of chronic fatigue syndrome and disrupts the body's natural cleansing cycles. Our Ayurveda Health Consultant will review your daily routine and provide the information you need to help create a daily schedule that will actually increase balance in your nervous system and aid in healing your body.

e) Ayurveda Herbs and Reduction in Free Radicals

During your consultation, our Ayurveda Health Consultants select the appropriate herbal formulas for aiding the healing process, strengthening digestion and helping the body purify itself of toxins, including free radicals.

Free radicals are highly irritating to the physiology and their presence creates and worsens many disorders, including chronic fatigue syndrome. When appropriate, our Ayurveda Health Consultants can recommend Ayurveda herbs that research has shown to be powerful anti-oxidants and free radical scavengers. Two Maharishi Ayurveda herbal preparations have been shown to have 1000 times more powerful anti-oxidant properties than vitamin C or E. These herbs can also have a holistic influence of balancing and nourishing the entire physiology.

Traditional Ayurveda theory says that herbs are most effective after a person completes an internal cleansing program. The cleansing and rejuvenation treatments that you will receive daily are the main focus of your in-residence stay. Once this program is finished, you are ready to gain maximum benefits from your herbal program.

f) Cleansing therapies: Maharishi RejuvenationSM Therapy
Your daily three-hour treatment program of massage, heat treatment and mild internal cleansing is the cornerstone of your In-residence treatment at The Raj. The combination of these three treatments received every day for 5 to 21 days creates the ideal internal physical environment for healing.

g) Exercise and Flexibility Education

Maharishi Ayurveda considers proper stretching and flexibility exercises to have a very positive effect on the body's healing response and the treatment of many chronic conditions. During your in-residence stay at The Raj, we offer Yoga classes every day and teach you a simple but profound set of postures that can be practiced daily to create a healthy flexibility throughout the body. We also instruct you in individualized Yoga breathing practices that create a state of restful alertness in mind and body.

Our in-residence courses give you knowledge you can continue to apply after you leave The Raj to maintain your progress in alleviating the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome.
